Woman shares paper bag hack to quickly soften avocados and ripen bananas

A woman has taken the internet by storm after sharing a genius tip for softening avocados and ripening bananas using just paper bags.

Veronica Cannady, from New York, claims to have discovered a simple hack for speeding up the ripening process – which can sometimes take more than a week.

And all you have to do is place the fruits in a brown bag and store it in a dark place for two days.

Speaking to Jam Press, the 31-year-old said: “I hate waiting for avocados to get soft and knew there had to be a better way.

“Avocados have a hormone called ethylene which occurs in fruits and triggers them to ripen. Putting the avocados in a brown bag causes that ethylene to become trapped.

“You place the avocado in a paper bag and put it somewhere dark, the oven or microwave is best. I love it – no more waiting weeks for a ripe avocado.”

Cannady shared the genius hack on TikTok – garnering a staggering 13,000 views and more than 1,200 likes.

This isn’t the first time the TikTokker has gone viral.

Her “must try” tip that keeps avocados fresher for longer was a huge internet hit – raking in an impressive 10 million views.

Demonstrating how it works in a TikTok video, Cannady puts half of a leftover avocado into a cup of water, making sure the seed is still attached, then stores it in the fridge.

“So ever since I learned from TikTok that you can put avocados inside of water and put them in the refrigerator to preserve them and keep them from turning brown, I’ve never stopped doing it. Definitely recommend,” she said.

The New-Yorker claims this helps prevent the fruit from turning brown before she has a chance to eat it – and can keep the produce fresh for around two days.
